ABB - Emax 2 circuit breakers offer new digital capabilities

The Emax 2 series of circuit breakers is a proven solution in low-voltage applications to increase efficiency and improve reliability. Excellent connectivity, simple and time-saving installation and great ease of use are key features that hold up under all conditions. ABB has further developed and expanded the features of the circuit breaker with a view to new applications and future expectations.

Ekip Touch trip unit

One of the most eye-catching additions is the Ekip Touch trip unit. This is a smart and advanced solution for upgrading Emax 2 dispensers. The Ekip Touch trip unit is the standard to future-proof the vending machines.

As desired, the standard trip unit can be expanded immediately or at a later stage with security and/or measuring functions. For example, for accurately measuring and monitoring consumption (kWh), voltage (DC/AC) and quality (cos phi). This data can then be used again for possible predictive maintenance. For this purpose, relevant data are read out via optional communication modules and analysed in a superordinate system or the cloud-based platform ABB AbilityTM Energy and Asset Manager.

New versions for renewables

The Emax 2 series has been further expanded with versions aimed at optimising plants for renewables. The world of renewables is evolving rapidly, increasing the focus on power continuity for critical loads, minimum maintenance requirements and a small footprint.

For example, the Emax 2 MS/DC-E 1500V DC circuit breaker is designed for PV systems with amps up to 4,000 A and voltages up to 1500V DC. In addition to IEC versions, there are also versions suitable for areas where UL regulations apply. In these applications, they reduce the need for large numbers of combiners, inverters and conductors compared to 1,000V DC systems. System designers thus improve the energy efficiency of their system, shorten installation time and reduce associated costs.

The Emax 2 / E9 900V AC circuit breaker also focuses on protecting and managing systems linked to renewable energy sources such as wind and PV. The E9 900V AC version has the same footprint and protection rating as the standard Emax 2 and improves the reliability and performance of systems up to 900V AC in accordance with IEC 60947 standards.

Eneco - Green light for green electricity and steam
Eneco Bio Golden Raand, located in the port area of Delfzijl, converts biomass into green electricity and green steam. Each year, the plant processes approximately 300,000 tons of waste wood from the Netherlands and neighboring countries. As part of Eneco’s climate ambitions, a project began in 2022 to replace the existing fluorescent lighting in and around the boiler room. The project was carried out under the supervision of itsme. “Two factors were important in this process: the cost, of course, but also the level of service.”
