Modicon M580 Safety: independent control of safety and process functions
The Modicon M580S (Safety) is a controller with safety modules and integrated safety functions. Built on the award-winning Modicon platform, Schneider Electric's Modicon M580 Safety Controller combines the performance of its flagship Modicon M580 Ethernet programmable automation controller (ePAC) with double the processing power for the independent control of safety and process functions. Industrial users can now take advantage of the very best M580 performance, network functions and cyber security without having to design, install and maintain separate safety systems. This approach to unifying independent plant safety and process control protects the entire business environment, meaning that a failure in the process control system will not cause a failure in the safety system or affect the safety of the plant, people and all assets.
Safety System
The M580S Safety PAC consists of a single CPU with a Safety coprocessor required for parallel execution of the program code. The M580 Safety Controller System is certified to the requirements of Cat.4/PLe according to standard EN ISO 13849-1 and SIL3 according to standard IEC61508 and IEC 62061. With this certified system, the M580S is suitable for applications up to:
- PLe in accordance with EN ISO 13849-1
- SIL3 according to IEC61508 and IEC62061
Architecture
The Modicon M580S Safety PAC offers the following possible architectures:
- Combination of Safety and standard applications,
- Separate Safety and process control,
- Integration of process and machine safety functions,
- Safety system with high availability (redundancy).
Safety level
Modicon M580S improves system reliability through a unique combination of built-in cyber security and safety features:
Online error code correction (ECC)
- Watch dog safe
- Clock monitoring
- Safe application execution in its own CPU
- Memory isolation with controlled access of safe and standard memory
- Redundant CPU
An error in the standard application has no impact on the Safety application. SIL3 is achieved by dual execution of the Safety application, by using the BME5840S processors and the BMEP58CPROS3 coprocessor.
CIP Safety
The M580S system supports the CIP safety™ protocol as standard. CIP (Common Industrial Protocol) is the data protocol of Ethernet/IP, CIP Safety™ is an extension of Ethernet/IP. This means that the M580S system can control Safety devices over a standard Ethernet network. CIP Safety™ is a fail-safe communication protocol for safety applications up to and including Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3. CIP Safety™ is supported and applied by product suppliers of safety systems such as speed drives, remote I/O, optical sensors, robots, gateways and interlock switches.
