Changes to the RoHS Directive and the alternatives from LEDVANCE
- the end of the (compact) fluorescent lamp is approaching
The use of mercury in lighting products will be banned by the new RoHS Directive. What impact will this revision of the European Parliament and Council Directive 2011/65/EU have on the lighting market?

OVERVIEW OF AMENDMENTS TO THE ROHS DIRECTIVE
The use of mercury in lighting products is prohibited by the RoHS Directive. Until now, the directive has included exemptions for T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps, compact fluorescent lamps with pin base (CFLni), HPD lamps and special purpose lamps (e.g. UV-C lamps). These exemptions, as defined in Annex III of the EU directive, were modified in February 2022. The consequences of this are as follows:
- A ban on all T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps from 24 August 2023
- A ban on all CFLni lamps from 24 February 2023
- An extension of the exemption for HPD lamps from 3 to 5 years
- An extension of the exemption for special purpose lamps from 3 to 5 years (a.o. UV-C lamps)
In contrast to the SLR regulation, the changes to the RoHS directive now mean the end for all T5/T8 fluorescent lamps and compact fluorescent lamps with pin bases within general lighting. This will have a significant impact on customers currently using these products. However, it will still be possible to sell and use stored existing stock.
RELY ON FUTURE-PROOF ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTS
LEDVANCE is continuously developing innovative lighting technologies and already offers a wide range of efficient alternatives. LED products from LEDVANCE already comfortably meet today's minimum requirements.

Eneco - Green light for green electricity and steamRead moreEneco Bio Golden Raand, located in the port area of Delfzijl, converts biomass into green electricity and green steam. Each year, the plant processes approximately 300,000 tons of waste wood from the Netherlands and neighboring countries. As part of Eneco’s climate ambitions, a project began in 2022 to replace the existing fluorescent lighting in and around the boiler room. The project was carried out under the supervision of itsme. “Two factors were important in this process: the cost, of course, but also the level of service.”
